Racism is not an opinion. It is an attack on human dignity, a form of discrimination that is contrary to the fundamental principles of our Republic and punishable by law in certain circumstances. In a democracy founded on equality, liberty, and fraternity, no statement that incites hatred or stigmatizes a person because of their origin or the color of their skin can ever be trivialized.
The remarks made by Celeste Boccia about Kylian Mbappé concern us all. Beyond the individual who was targeted, they affect everyone who faces racism, prejudice, and discrimination in their daily lives. Such rhetoric fuels a climate of exclusion and contributes to normalizing a form of hatred that continues to destroy lives.
Racism is not a thing of the past. It remains a daily reality for millions of people. Behind every racist remark lie broader forms of discrimination in access to employment, housing, education, healthcare, and in everyday life. The fight against racism is far from over, and each of us has a responsibility to reject any form of complacency toward it.
This case is particularly concerning because it involves a person entrusted with a public role. Serving the public interest carries a duty of integrity, impartiality, respect, and responsibility. Public officials and civil servants are expected to embody the values of the Republic and to guarantee equal treatment for everyone, regardless of their origin, religion, or skin color.
Sport, for its part, is a powerful force for social cohesion. It brings people together across differences, strengthens social bonds, and promotes the values of respect, solidarity, and inclusion. Exploiting it to spread prejudice or fuel hate speech is a betrayal of everything it stands for.
We cannot accept that such remarks should be made without consequences. History reminds us of the devastating effects of racism, xenophobia, and every form of discrimination. We have a collective duty never to trivialize them and to respond firmly whenever they reappear in public life.
The French national team is French in all its diversity. It represents the entire Nation. No racist ideology can ever undermine that reality.
Through this petition, we call for a full and transparent investigation into the alleged facts and for those responsible to be held fully accountable.
Should the reported remarks be confirmed, we call for:
Appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken, up to and including dismissal, in order to reaffirm that racist conduct or speech has no place in the values of the Republic, in public service, or in respect for human dignity.
Our players to have the right to compete against international teams without having to expect a wave of normalized racism, because no one is willing to take the necessary measures to ensure they are finally treated the same as everyone else.
This is not an issue with double standards: you do not get to decide when racism is acceptable based on which team you support. Because silence in the face of racism only strengthens it. Because we are all concerned. Because combating racism is a collective responsibility that admits no exceptions. Together, let us refuse to allow hatred to be treated as just another opinion.
