I am writing because Bedford School has recently been changed from an all-boys school to a co-educational institution by the new headmaster, Michael Sloan.
This change affects pupils, parents, alumni and staff across the school community in Bedford. Many of us feel surprised and upset that such a fundamental shift was announced without a clear consultation.
The move impacts traditions, teaching approaches and the identity that generations of families expected. I ask that the decision be reconsidered and that the school return to a boys-only model or at least pause the change until proper consultation is completed.
I propose concrete measures to address this.
The school governors and the board of trustees must immediately suspend further co-educational admissions and commission an independent impact assessment on teaching quality, pastoral care and campus facilities.
The headmaster should organize an open consultation with parents, pupils, staff and alumni within a clear timetable. If full reversal is not possible, the board must present a transparent plan that explains why co-education is essential and how it will protect educational standards and welfare.
I expect the school leadership to publish options, financial implications and timelines, and to allow a formal vote or petition by stakeholders before any final commitment.
I call on parents, former pupils and staff to sign and share this petition now to ensure our voices are heard before the next intake cycle. Acting quickly will protect the school’s values and give the community a real say in its future. I will continue to support constructive dialogue, but I will oppose decisions that were taken without meaningful consultation. Thank you for taking action with me.
