The world of horse racing was struck by another preventable tragedy on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the prestigious William Hill Mildmay Novices’ Chase in Liverpool.
Gold Dancer, a magnificent 7-year-old horse, won his race only to pay for that victory with his life.
Upon landing the final jump, Gold Dancer broke his back.
Horrific footage showed the animal staggering in pain, unable to walk, while his jockey, Paul Townsend, faced heavy criticism for failing to dismount immediately despite the horse's obvious distress.
Ultimately, the veterinary team determined his injuries were irreversible, and he was euthanised on the track.
This is not an isolated incident. Gold Dancer is the fifth horse to die this season alone in British racing. The current safety protocols and the extreme physical demands placed on these animals are failing them.
We cannot continue to treat living beings as disposable entertainment for gambling and prestige.
Our DEMAND :
An immediate and independent investigation by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) into the safety of the jumps at the Mildmay Course.
A formal review of jockey conduct regarding animal distress, specifically addressing the failure to dismount Gold Dancer instantly after his injury.
The implementation of stricter welfare regulations, including a limit on the height and frequency of jumps to prevent spinal and catastrophic limb failures.
A transparent public record of all racing fatalities with mandatory penalties for tracks that exceed a safety threshold.
Sign this petition to tell the racing industry that a "win" is never worth a life.
