It is with outrage and profound sorrow that we witness the return of a barbaric practice many thought was abolished: the spectacle of the "dancing bear." Reports confirm a revival of this subterranean torture in rural and border areas of South Asia, including Pakistan and Nepal. Innocent bear cubs—often orphaned after their mothers are slaughtered—are captured from the wild for a life of unspeakable, lifelong pain.
To make a bear "dance," a hot iron rod is forcibly rammed through their sensitive muzzle without anaesthesia, and a heavy rope or iron ring is threaded through the open wound. This becomes the primary tool of control. The bear is forced to stand on heated metal plates. When they lift their paws from the intense pain, it appears as "dancing" to the tourists, accompanied by the beating of drums. Their teeth are typically broken, and they are starved to maintain submissiveness. This is a complete physical and psychological destruction of a sentient being.
There are already rehabilitation centres and sanctuaries available, proving that this cruelty is unnecessary. We demand that national governments and law enforcement in the affected regions strictly enforce the laws against animal exploitation, prioritise the shutting down of remaining rings, and prosecute all organisers and spectators to the fullest extent.
Sign this petition to expose the return of this medieval cruelty and demand an absolute, permanent end to the "dancing bear" industry.
