Beneath the tropical image of coconut water and milk lies a systemic cycle of abuse and slavery. In Thailand, thousands of pig-tailed macaques are snatched from the wild as infants, separated from their mothers, and forced into a life of hard labour. These highly intelligent, social animals are chained by the neck and trained through violence and fear to climb tall trees and pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day.
When they are not working, these monkeys are kept in isolation, tethered to rusty poles or confined in cramped, filthy cages where they cannot even move freely. The psychological toll is devastating; many exhibit signs of mental collapse, such as repetitive pacing or self-mutilation. To prevent them from defending themselves against their handlers, their canine teeth are often forcibly removed. This is not a tradition; it is a brutal exploitation of sentient beings for industrial profit.
Major international retailers have already started to delist Thai coconut products linked to forced monkey labour, but the practice persists due to a lack of government transparency. We demand that the Thai government and the coconut industry implement a mandatory certification system for monkey-free farms and invest in mechanical harvesting equipment.
Sign this petition to tell the Thai coconut industry that we will not buy products built on animal slavery. Demand a total ban on forced monkey labour now.
