The petition
In light of the possibility of authorising the transfer of orcas Wikie and Keijo from Marineland Antibes in France to Loro Parque in Tenerife, we want to express our deep concern and request that this decision be halted immediately due to its negative implications for the welfare of these majestic animals in such a small space.
Historically, the transfer of marine animals such as orcas has been shown to cause them extreme stress, affecting their physical and mental health. Orcas are highly social creatures that live in complex family groups, and transporting them to a new environment can uproot their social relationships, cause stress and anxiety, promote aggression or attacks among the animals, and consequently shorten their life expectancy, or even endanger it.
Scientific and animal welfare organisations agree that orcas thrive better in natural spaces, not in confined environments that fail to meet their needs for space, socialisation, and exercise. Backgrounds in other parks have proven that captivity conditions often lead to abnormal behaviour and health problems in these cetaceans.
From the educational community, we also receive great concern upon observing that normalising captivity and the exploitation of animals does not create the awareness or sensitivity that guarantees a healthy and respectful coexistence among all species, which is undoubtedly the goal of any civilised society.
Moreover, changes in regulations and conservation approaches in numerous countries highlight the movement towards the protection of species in their natural environment and not in captivity. It is time for Spain to embrace a progressive and humanitarian approach, placing true conservation before entertainment.
We formally request that the Ministry maintain its opposition to this transfer and not grant the necessary authorisations for the import and stay of Wikie and Keijo in Spanish territory. This step will not only protect orcas Wikie and Keijo but also reaffirm an ethical commitment to the welfare and conservation of marine life.
There are several projects, developed by experts, that propose a rehabilitation plan for the orcas in semi-natural facilities, such as a marine sanctuary, to end the control and confinement and above all the exploitation of these highly intelligent animals.
We also request that dolphins from the French park not be brought to Spain to continue being exploited in our country. It is time to seek alternatives to these circus-like shows by a company with commercial purposes.
Please join us in this urgent cause to ensure that these cetaceans remain in an environment that guarantees their welfare. Sign this petition to prevent the transfer of Wikie and Keijo to Loro Parque and the dolphins to other parks.
