An outrageous video, released on April 9, 2026, has sparked global outrage. In Pattaya, a foreigner was filmed in the midst of a confrontation, handling a small monkey with unprecedented violence: swung back and forth, held tightly by the neck, and even forced into the pocket of a pair of shorts.
Intolerable acts of cruelty Beyond the already shocking images, testimonies from local workers report even more severe abuses. According to several sources, the animal was forced to smoke an e-cigarette and consume alcohol in establishments in the Jomtien area. When confronted by one of the individuals, the person simply replied that it was his "pet" and that he was free to do whatever he wanted with it.
The observation: a protected species in danger According to the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, this monkey appears to be a pig-tailed macaque, a wild species strictly protected in Thailand. Its possession by an individual is illegal without official permission. This case of blatant abuse is part of a context of excesses related to tourism, where wild animals are used as mere entertainment props.
Our demands: In the absence of immediate action from local authorities, we demand:
The immediate identification and apprehension of the individual appearing in the video;
The seizure and rescue of the animal by the relevant authorities so that it can receive appropriate care in a sanctuary;
The strict enforcement of the law for the prevention of cruelty to animals and for the illegal possession of a protected species;
Increased monitoring in bars and tourist locations in Pattaya to end the exploitation of macaques and gibbons.
Let’s mobilise! We cannot allow an individual to torture a sentient being with impunity for his own pleasure. The silence of the authorities must not continue.
