Objective: Let’s call on FIFA to take a stand against the massacres of stray dogs in Morocco, co-hosting country of the 2030 World Cup.
As the 2030 World Cup is announced as a moment of global celebration between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, another, much darker reality is playing out in the streets of Morocco. Local and international organisations reveal that a brutal "cleansing" program is underway, aiming to eliminate up to 3 million stray dogs before the event.
Unbearable scenes have been filmed and shared:
In Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fes...
Dogs are shot in the street, sometimes in front of children;
Others are poisoned or captured before mysteriously disappearing.
This is all justified by the authorities in the name of "public health" and the fight against rabies, while ethical solutions such as sterilisation, vaccination, and sheltering exist.
And yet, in the official FIFA 2030 bid evaluation report (page 109), Morocco promised to ban these killings from August 2024 and to develop care programs.
These commitments are supposed to be legally binding according to FIFA's rules.
Today, we call on FIFA to uphold its own commitments regarding ethics and transparency.
A public condemnation of the massacres of stray animals;
Official explanations demanded from the Moroccan government;
Clear support for ethical and sustainable alternatives, such as sterilisation, shelters, and vaccination.
