In March 2026, shocking footage was released by the organization Animal Equality, exposing the absolute horror hidden within the West Strome salmon farm in Scotland. This facility, operated by the industrial giant Bakkafrost, is the site of animal suffering on an industrial scale.
The undercover investigation documented unbearable scenes of thousands of salmon enduring daily torment. The images reveal fish with gaping facial wounds, some literally with missing faces or torn jaws, struggling to swim in infested waters. The primary cause of these mutilations is a massive and uncontrolled infestation of sea lice—parasites that eat the fish alive—as well as brutal mechanical treatments used to try to remove them.
This systemic suffering is unacceptable. Bakkafrost claims to operate responsibly, but this factual evidence shows a very different reality.
We cannot ignore this silent massacre.
We demand:
That the Scottish Government imposes an immediate moratorium on the expansion of all open-net cage salmon farms.
A thorough independent investigation into animal welfare practices at Bakkafrost, with severe criminal penalties for any violations found.
A mandatory transition toward land-based closed-containment systems to protect both the fish and the marine environment.
